Three Reasons Why Medical

Supply Recycling Is Crucial!

  • It improves healthcare in developing countries

  • It keeps hundreds of thousands of pounds of non-biodegradable "waste" out of our landfills

  • It lowers medical facility trash disposal fees, helping to lower patients' fees

PWH's ability to reduce the stream of medical waste has grown tremendously since our inception, from 14 tons in 2010 to 34 tons in 2015 (through August).

Supplies Needing Sorting

WHY SUCH WASTE?:

Government regulations prevent health care facilities from reabsorbing supplies from operating rooms and patient areas back into the system. Everyday, hospitals, nursing homes and other medical facilities throughout the U.S. throw out a tremendous amount of usuable equipment and medical supplies, some still sealed in packaging. These medical supplies can no longer be used in the U.S. but they are of great value to developing countries.

HOW PWH WORKS:

We have partnered with over 85 facilities in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts to establish recycling programs. We provide recycle bins for each floor and educate the nurses and housekeepers on their use.  In addition, the facilities managers gather large durable medical equipment such as beds and wheelchairs, and PWH volunteers pick everything up weekly.

WHERE DOES IT ALL GO?

The items are taken to a warehouse where they are sorted and processed for shipment to countries in Africa, Southeast Asia and South America. We have identified local hospital representatives in over 20 foreign countries who are responsible for assuring the supplies reach needy urban and rural hospitals and clinics.

Picking Up Supplies
Traveling To A Developing Country?
Take advantage of our $2 per pound program!

If you're going on a medical mission, you can bring supplies from PWH to the  medical facility where you'll be working. Or, if you are planning your own trip to a developing country and want to bring medical supplies to a clinic, PWH will help! We can find a contact and location where your supplies will be most appreciated.  In either case, we'll pack up to 50 pounds of appropriate supplies per traveler in duffel bags (ours or yours), and we'll provide you with any necessary paperwork to deliver the supplies to their ultimate destination. Recipients are always grateful, and meeting people on the front lines of healthcare delivery in your host country is immensely rewarding.  Whether you take a gallon zip-lock bag or a few duffle bags, you can help make a difference!  We require a minumum donation of $50, which allows you to bring 25 lbs of supplies to your host country.

Call us to make an appointment to pick up  supplies, and bring the completed supply request form with you when you come.  We'll do our best to help to make your trip even more enjoyable and meaningful.

PWH also supports local community organizations and has given away several thousand pounds of personal care items to churches, food pantries and homeless shelters in the greater Portland, Maine area.  If your organization would like to receive a donation, please contact us and let us know what you are in need of.
