GLOBAL HEALTH EDUCATION SERIES

Sally Fitzgerald RN, Anne Carroll RN and Karen Wadman, RN speaking to a group of 50 community members and students about their trip to Mulago Hospital in Senegal to teach neonatal nurses how to care for premature babies.
Partners for World Health offers a monthly lecture series on global health care. The speakers are often members of Partners for World Health medical teams who have recently returned from health care missions. Other times, they are medical professionals who have organized their own programs in developing countries and want to share their experiences. To date, we've had speakers share their experiences about working in Bangladesh, Cambodia, Ethiopia, Ghana, Haiti, Libya, Peru, Senegal, Turkey and Uganda.
- Senegal presentation
Five students from UMaine at Orono and UNE presented their experiences on the PWH trip to Senegal. They described working at four locations in Senegal - the Fish Lady Project, where they give health care assessments and assistance to the women selling fish on the beach, a prison, a birthing center, and an orphanage. Everyone was moved by their compassion for all they worked with.
- Uganda presentation
Dr. Sara Nelson, an emergency room doctor at Maine Medical Center, spoke about the emergency room program that she and four other doctors from across the US established in a rural hospital in Uganda. Their goal was to create a sustainable ER that would be run by local nurses and would focus on easily treatable common illnesses, such as diarhhea and malaria, that were causing unneccessary deaths in the community. Their program has been so successful that the government of Uganda has looked to them to institute similar programs in other hospitals.
- Bangladesh presentation
Anne Carroll, Sally Fitzgerald and Karen Wadman, RN's, spoke about their work in the NICU at Mulago Hospital in Bangladesh. They found this experience to be both heart-breaking and immensely uplifting.
The lectures take place at our offices at 2112 Broadway in South Portland on the first Tuesday of every month from September through May. The lectures begin at 7:00 pm, but please join us for appetizers and beverages at 6:00pm.
Presentations also take place at the University of Maine in Orono on the second Wednesday of the months of September, October, November, February, March and April. These are sponsored by the students in our UMO PWH Chapter.
Please come learn about your international neighbors, their healthcare challenges and how Americans are dedicating their time to make the world a better place!
